Iao means "cloud supreme."   The Iao Valley is often covered
in clouds which bring frequent rain that feeds the streams
located here.  These streams have been carving this
amazing landscape over the past 1.5 million years.
Commonly called Iao Needle, the traditional Hawaiian name
for the 2,250 foot peak that dominates the valley is
Kuka`emoku. This peak is known as the phallic stone of
Kanaloa, Hawaiian god of the o
cean. The park is rich in
history and is considered sacred.
 Iao Valley State Park is
located west of Wailuku.
